RED EARTH
Author:
Harvey
Mendez
In Red
Earth, the protagonist realizes he
cannot just rely on skills used when
he was younger fighting the Nazis. We
see an older family man use his wits
when pushed to extremes. As he watches
his world crumble around him, he knows
he must escape from Bulgaria before
the Iron curtain completely descends
and ensnares his family.
I could
not escape the feeling that this
situation actually happened in some
variation the author depicts, as this
realistic story unfolds in the early
50’s against solid historical
background as the cold war starts to
stifle Eastern Europe. The plot
doesn’t get bogged down in a lot of
political details; you just get swept
up, knowing the stakes are high from
the brutal first chapter to the end in
this live-or-die bold cat-and-mouse
escape.
If you
like a thriller based on real events,
turn off the TV and curl up with a
bowl of pop corn and this book You
will glad you did.
