IN PURSUIT OF THE ENEMY
Author:
A.C. Ellis
Before Ellis introduces the reader to Brad Carpenter, our recovering alcoholic and homicide detective, we are thrown right into the action. Kim awakens to find himself in the woods, drugged, and nowhere near his home in San Diego. It’s cold and begins to snow and as he starts to take in his surroundings, finds himself in the company of two other men in his same situation, one alive. They find weapons, mysteriously laid near their drugged bodies and begin to search the forest, hoping for rescue. The two soon realize that they are being hunted, as men in camouflage watch their every move.
Next we meet Brad Carpenter, reading about Kim’s death in the obituaries. He had known Kim. In fact, he spent his time in Vietnam fighting against Kim. The situation forces Brad to face his past, something he has struggled to forget for over thirty years. Brad was tormented by his time in Vietnam and had just recently found himself in a good mental state.
Brad is flawed and he has struggled. Because of this, readers will find interest in following Brad throughout his journeys. Ellis has managed to create a promising series with a character that we can all relate to on different levels. In Pursuit of the Enemy is well written and mystery/crime fiction fans will find themselves in want of more.
