ECLIPSE OF THE BRIGHT MOON

Author:
Donald C. Lee

Don Lee’s latest novel, Eclipse of the Bright Moon, is an insightful look at the events in Communist China that lead to the Tiananmen Square confrontation in the Spring of 1989. It is written with the same care and attention to detail that made his first novel, A Fool’s Disciple, such a good read. Eclipse grabs your attention with the first paragraph and holds it throughout the story. The only flaw is the author’s use of Chinese words many of which I could not interpret even within their context. Apart from this, Don Lee tells an engrossing story of love and survival in the midst of political chaos.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don Lee has crafted a great read in Eclipse of the Bright Moon. For those of us who remember the turbulent days of 1989 when China was churning with the rise of the Democracy Movement, it gives us a context for our memories. For those that only know that period as another hidden struggle in China's long history, it lays out the hopes, fears and pain of those trapped in the middle of that violent time. And for all of us, it provides a glimpse at a rich and seldom-seen tapestry of life in that hidden kingdom as only someone who lived there at that time could do. Mr. Lee has created a group of engrossing characters that you will find intriguing and will truly care about. It is a tale filled with love, fear and pent-up anger against a rich backdrop of life in a corrupt, totalitarian country struggling to come to grips with the 20th century and with western ideas and ideals. I highly recommend this book.
