If you break down the word Deathlessness into three
words – death, less, and ness – the mortal coil finds life not a
fatality. The three chapbooks, or parts, speak of life, love and
mortality in equal measures.
Strangely, with a such dark subject, the author
writes of the "everlasting" and the "temporal"…the two-sided coin we
each share with loved ones, fallen ones and the unknown.
Whether its dreams, rebirth, or love, they're
companions we come to know through this work. As John Donne wrote,
“Death, be not proud.” He's not proud. In Stafford's work there is
dignity, integrity and grace. The rewards outweigh the subject and I
for one am grateful.
