ANGELS IN DISGUISE

Author:
Betty Sullivan La Pierre

If you enjoy a mystery with personality and the warmth of human drama, this is one book you will want to read. Another stimulating tale of Tom Casey, aka Hawkman, that will take you into the dark secrets of a woman who has disappeared without a trace.

Talented author Betty Sullivan La Pierre gives the reader a tale of blended subplots and lifelike characters who act with hidden motives. You'll want to read the other tales in this series, perhaps more than once. Enjoy. I sure did.

~ Anne K. Edwards

Ms. LaPierre’s writing shows a new maturity with her latest installment in the Hawkman series. Tom Casey, aka Hawkman, her much loved character, has a new case, but he is finding himself distracted by his wife’s sudden medical problems. It is hard to concentrate on a thorny problem while Jennifer is undergoing a battery of frightening tests in order to determine the cause of her ominous symptoms. Hawkman can’t help but worry, and he vows to be with her every step of the way, no matter how difficult it becomes. The love between Jennifer and Hawkman just keeps growing and it seems to suffuse every page they share.

Hawkman’s new case involves a missing woman. When Paul, the woman’s husband, explains his problem, he is very distraught, despite the months of separation he and Carlotta have been through recently. Under other circumstances, Hawkman might think this was simply a wayward wife who has run off with another man -- except for the daughter. How could Carlotta leave her child without explanation?

Then, the threatening messages start showing up on his answering machine. The voice, while distorted, sounds vaguely familiar.

This is one nasty felon, with an old-fashioned motive so uncompromising it will give you goose bumps. Cold-blooded predators like this terrify the most stalwart among us, for there is no seeing this one coming. Packed with emotion born of personal experience, ANGELS IN DISGUISE is Ms. LaPierre’s best yet.

In one of Hawkman’s toughest cases to date, he struggles to find answers and worries about his wife, Jennifer, as she undergoes cancer treatments. His life has taken a sudden sharp turn down a road of darkness, and he needs all the angels in disguise he can get to light his way.

Ms. La Pierre puts the M in Mystery. No matter how I strung the pieces together, I couldn’t solve this baffling case. Written with a soft heart and a strong hand, Angels in Disguise is sure to please any mystery fan, and endear Hawkman a little more to your hearts.

Angels in Disguise is an emotional tour de force. Indeed, it is hard to concentrate on the business on hand – better said on the who-done-it aspect) when one's beloved wife is ill, is undergoing so many tests, and they face an uncertain tomorrow. Yet, ah yes, life goes on, and Hawkman has to do his best to do justice to his calling. Recommended not only as a pot-boiler, but as an inspirational read.

4 1/2 Stars

Angels in Disguise is my first Hawkman adventure, but it won’t be my last. LaPierre has created very likable characters with heart and soul in the Caseys. Tom, a tough, no-nonsense hero whose dealings are both compassionate and sympathetic, not only with his wife but his clients as well, makes it easy to see why Hawkman has such a following. The story was well written with good pacing and the ending (which I thought I had figured out well in advance) had a twist I didn’t see coming.

I admire LaPierre’s writing technique as a storyteller and in the deft way she incorporates a mini-course in cancer into the storyline. I was entertained and educated and give Hawkman a hearty two ‘thumb’s up’ as recommended reading.
