From Through Different Windows...
I inspected the doorjamb and the door. It had not been nailed or glued shut. The door had apparently become wedged tight by the settlement of the old house. The inside of the door looked as any door might, complete with hinges and doorknob. But the outside was a different matter. It was obviously constructed to be undetectable. I marveled at the craftsmanship, but wondered what would have been the purpose to hide this passageway to the basement. And why had the door had not been fixed once it started to stick?
I began to walk down the stairway, but as my head became level with the basement ceiling, I stopped. With the exception of the faint glow coming from the hole in the kitchen floor, there was only eerie darkness. I was not about to descend one more step into the stagnant air of the dungeon without light. I might be an adventurous person, but that exceeded my boundaries. I knew that the darker it was the more colorful my imagination would become.
