“What’s he do? He does have a job, I hope.”
“He’s on vacation. He didn’t say from what,” replied Candace. “He must have some money. He’s paying me rent, in advance, even.”
“Sounds like you hit the jackpot. You was all lined up for a lawsuit and instead you got a hunky man to come live with you and pay you rent. You oughta come with me to the boats while you’re hot.”
“I don’t think luck had anything to do with it,” Candace twirled her coffee cup around in the saucer. “It was that fast-talking daughter of mine. She got to him first and sweet talked him into not suing us and to come stay with us while he’s recuperating.”
“Damn, that girl is good. She’s only twelve?”
“Going on thirty,” said Candace. “I think she’s got the hots for him.”
“That don’t sound good. You think he might be the type to take advantage of a girl like that?”
“He better not,” said Candace finishing her coffee. “I still got Howard’s guns. If I catch him in bed with Caroline he’ll find out what a twelve gauge can do. I gotta get home and see if they’re all right. See ya Monday.”
