From now on, the trail would be new territory for the Kincaid’s. The trail would be difficult to follow and they did not know what the future held. Carefully, they watched the trail ahead to ensure they were headed towards Abilene and were not riding into trouble. From now on, they would ride with both ears and eyes wide open.
He might be only sixteen, a little lanky and mite awkward, but he was man grown and well able to handle responsibility. His brothers and Jesus Salas had taught him at a young age the skills necessary to survive in this austere territory. With their wise counsel, he was ready for whatever lay ahead.
The trail they followed today was far from the territory they were familiar with and they would have to watch the trail closely to remain on the proper trail. They were far from the protection of the ranch and the town of Tyler. They were at the mercy of the vermin that frequented the Abilene trail in search of helpless travelers. Billy and Ken were not helpless, but this was new territory for them and they would have to be wary of strangers.
