Life's Potpourri
by Ruth Ann Morrison

From Life's Potpourri...

When will this nightmare end? Annie thought but instead replied, “Up here.”

Bill came stomping up the steep stairs, all wet from the rain, into the bedroom and saw the puppy on the bed. He picked up the little dog and threw her down the flight of stairs. The poor little puppy yelped all the way down; she hit the bottom of the stairs and ran to another part of the house to hide.

Annie yelled, “You had no right to do that to my dog.”

“This is MY house and I will do what ever I like. Is that clear,” Bill yelled. “Now I am going to change into dry clothes and go downstairs to have a six pack of beer and watch the football game so don’t disturb me. You better not be asleep when I come back up.”

This is it, the end, Annie thought. She had tried to make the marriage work but he was just too mean. If she took the whole bottle of tranquilizers, she would be out of her misery but the little puppy would be left to suffer at Bill’s treacherous hands and she would not give him any satisfaction. No, she would have to grin and bear it until she found a new home. One day soon they would quietly move away after he went to work and start a new life somewhere else. Until then the stormy siege rages as the rain continued to fall like teardrops on the windowpane.
