After lunch on our third day at Kariega, we returned to our lodge to find it in a state of disarray, as if it had been burgled. Indeed it had been burgled, but none of the usual valuables were stolen. If we had stayed another few days, we might have witnessed the full effects of consuming a mixture of hormone replacement tablets, toothpaste, Milk of Magnesia and Motilium on a tribe of little Vervet monkeys, who inhabited the trees around our lodge and had paid our lodge an uninvited visit through the bathroom window while we were out. Though they had high-tailed it by the time we came back, from our balcony we did spot the guilty monkeys – they were far from shy and very cheeky. One of their number particularly attracted our attention. He was swinging wildly from a high branch and hooting at the top of his voice – an effect, which no doubt was caused by his imbibing the mixture of our medicines. Another was that his testicles had turned bright blue! Served him right!
