From Heaven-taught
Plowman and Other Poetic Devotions...
Valley of Tears
In a valley of tears
On cemetery row
A woman’s crying
For her aged beloved
Who’s gone to a higher hill.
Sunday morning came down
A lonely church bell rang
A choir praised his goodness
Gardenia’s blossomed in the sun
Twilight fell to his wake.
It was bean – picking time again
The apples coming soon
Life moves along pretty well
Underneath a harvest moon.
Tears in the cemetery still fall
In a river like a current
From the high peaks to the bottom lands
Idolized, adored, loved, endeared
And missed, a patriarch to many.
The man was a hero, a friend
Sacrificed his heart, soul, and land
To lay foundations in the town
As he inspired others to do the same.
He was a dreamer some said
By the sweat of his brow
And two strong hands
Made a world of plenty
For all to understand.
