The Eugenators
by Jeff Taylor

From The Eugenators...

Chris looked at her then. She looked scared, which any twelve-year-old would have a right to be, even though he did not recall ever seeing her look this way.

“You could live with us. I’ve talked to my mom about it hundreds of times over the years. Even she admits you would be happier with us.”

“I would be, although I don’t think I could take orders from her forever. Is that why she never made the offer?”

“It isn’t that. It’s just that she isn’t sure about you yet.”

Chris was about to ask what that was supposed to mean when they both turned their heads to the sound of an energetic hoot from down below. A uniformed police officer was dancing as he emerged from the generator shack, gyrating his hips while holding a large coffee can over his head. It might have been reminiscent of one of those African tribeswomen that walked around with big pots of water on her head, except the cop had to be over six feet and two hundred pounds.

“I’ve got it! I’ve got the big daddy!”

Coral watched in fascination for a moment, and then turned to ask Chris what he made of the scene below. She never got a word out. She only waited. When Chris finally lifted his head from behind his arm, his face was wet with tears.
