Dear Mr. Kapps
by Robert Ferrier

From Dear Mr. Kapps...

Something cool happened! God sent an angel to me! Well, the American Cancer Society sent her. At least she looks like an angel, with long blond hair, blue eyes, and a warm smile. Lea Walker studies journalism at Harmon College. She survived leukemia seven years ago, when she was 12. Now she volunteers her time talking to cancer patients. Mr. Kapps, you can't imagine how much it helped to talk to someone who made it! That's why I call her my angel (but not to her face). Anyway, like BB, she told me what to expect. Like how some people will treat me differently, because they think I'm going to die, how I've got to go on with my life, not changing things, taking days one at a time and not getting bummed out when crap happens (like low blood counts). Lea gives life-vibes! If she made it through, then BB and I can, too! At the end of our talk, I told Lea about Jenny. Lea smiled. She said any girl likes to feel appreciated by a guy. If I don't try, Jenny will never know how I feel about her. Lea said she'll visit me next week, and she's going to ask what happened with Jenny. Now I'm really feeling the pressure. Fang is scowling at me. Snotty tabby. Drools. Mr. Kapps, I know you're busy, but could you break the rule and answer this personally? Ms. Shellbruner is okay, but I need your letter, not a T-shirt. That would mean so much to me
