Nothingness rolled over her again. When it rolled away, there were other sounds: footsteps and the scraping of chairs against a floor and whispered words she couldn't make out. She felt suddenly annoyed, even angry, at her helplessness. She felt embarrassed, ashamed. She was probably wearing one of those tie-in-the-back hospital gowns, designed to show off her worst feature. And that meant someone had removed her clothing. Strangers had seen her naked, had watched her sleep, had smiled sympathetically as she drooled into her pillow. She wanted to pull the sheet over her head, but that would tip them off, let them know that she was awake and aware. Why had she been so reckless, so stupid, so intent on winning a verbal ping-pong match with Stu that she'd fallen into the pit and made herself into a victim?

Victim? The word triggered a memory of the voice she'd heard before the second cave-in. "You should have stayed away from here. This is your own fault. No one can blame us for what will happen to you."
